Roof Cost Per Square Converter
One bid is priced “per square,” another “per square foot,” a third as a lump sum. Convert any roofing quote between all three so you can compare bids on the same basis in seconds.
Calculator
$425/square equals $4.25/sq ft; across 24.60 squares that is $10,455. Convert any quote format to compare bids fairly.
Roofing bids arrive in different shapes. One contractor quotes “$425 a square,” another “$4.25 a foot,” a third just gives you a single total. Those can be the same price or wildly different — you cannot tell until you put them on one scale. Because a square is exactly 100 square feet, the conversion is simple arithmetic, and this tool does it both ways.
Convert every bid to a price per square foot and to a total for your roof, and the cheapest number stops hiding behind the units. As always, no price is stored: you enter the quote you were given, and the tool only reshapes it.
Formula
price_per_sq_ft = price_per_square ÷ 100
total = price_per_square × squares
And to go the other way: price_per_square = price_per_sq_ft × 100. Because one square is 100 square feet, converting between the two is just a factor of 100.
Worked example
A contractor quotes $425 per square. Divide by 100:
$425 ÷ 100 = $4.25 per square foot
Your roof is 24.6 squares (already including waste). The job total is:
$425 × 24.6 = $10,455
Now a rival bid of “$4.60 a foot” is easy to judge: that is $460 a square, or $11,316 for the same roof — clearly higher once you convert.
Compare bids on the same square count and scope
When you compare bids, make sure the square counts match. Some quotes price the measured roof area; others price the material actually ordered, which includes a waste allowance of roughly 10% on a simple roof and up to 15% on a cut-up one. A per-square price on ordered material looks lower per installed foot but buys extra you will not use. Convert both to a total for the same roof and the comparison becomes fair.
Also confirm what each price covers. A per-square number that leaves out tear-off, disposal or flashing is not comparable to one that includes them. Converting the units is the easy half; matching the scope is the half that actually protects your budget.
Frequently asked questions
How do I convert price per square to price per square foot?
Divide by 100. A roofing square is 100 square feet, so $425 per square is $4.25 per square foot. To go the other way, multiply the per-foot price by 100.
How many square feet are in a roofing square?
Exactly 100 square feet of roof surface. It is the standard unit contractors use to quote and order roofing material.
A bid is a lump sum — how do I find the price per square?
Divide the total by your roof size in squares. A $10,455 job on a 24.6-square roof works out to about $425 per square, or $4.25 per square foot.
Should the square count include waste?
It depends what the quote prices. If it prices installed roof area, use the measured squares. If it prices material ordered, include the waste allowance (about 10–15%). Make every bid use the same basis before you compare.
